Tune Up or Maintenance Service?

The answer use to be easy but today is a different world. The word "tune up" can now mean anything because it’s not just plugs and wires anymore. In fact, the manufactures don’t even list tune ups in their maintenance manuals anymore.

Times have changed and due to electronics and newer technologies, the recommended so called "tune-ups" or spark plug replacement now starts at 30,000 for most vehicles and is considered more of maintenance, like a oil filter.

Most vehicle's distributors and spark plug wires are gone from the engine. You can also say good bye to carburetors and most adjustments that you were able to make yourself. The on-board computer systems can handle everything from fuel mixture, timing, transmission shift points and engine idle speed.  Just plugs, fuel filter, air filters and PCV valve remain. These items were what we used to consider part of a "tune up". Someday the spark plugs may disappear also.

The meaning of a "tune-up" consists of parts needed to be replaced and what types of tests needs to be completed such as testing the spark plugs, ignition components, fuel filter, air filters, PCV valve, verify the electronic engine management system, coils, injectors and emission leaks.

To request a tune-up is not always as easy as it once was. Here we will do what we can to inform you of what is being done for your "tune-up" to cure your performance problems. Because a "tune-up" is now more of a maintenance service and helps to make your vehicle run better. This needs to be done every 30,000 miles. If you wait too long to perform this Maintenance Service, performance problems will usually be caused by something that is not normally replaced during a maintenance tune-up which ends up costing you more money.

When to service:
1. At regular intervals according to your vehicle's specifications
2. Between 30,000-45,000 miles under severe driving conditions
3. When you notice poor gas mileage, difficult starting conditions or high emission levels

The benefits:
1. Prolongs automobile engine life
2. Improves automobile engine performance
3. Improves gas mileage
4. Reduces emission pollution
5. Easier starting

Engine Maintenance

Many of today's automobiles are built to last their owners at least 200,000 miles, if the vehicle is properly maintained. Proper maintenance goes beyond just regular oil changes, but includes maintaining all of your fluids, replacing worn out parts and engine maintenance. The best way to preserve your engine is to get the vehicle fully inspected for items such as worn out spark plugs, needed adjustments in your timing belt or a low battery. Our recommendation for engine preventive maintenance is to bring your vehicle to Milex/Mr. Transmission for our expert tune-up service.

The MIlex/Mr. Transmission Tune-up Service includes:

  • Replace spark plugs
  • Adjust ignition timing, as required
  • Adjust curb idle speed, as required
  • Visually check emission related devices
  • Visually inspect plug wires
  • Visually inspect distributor cap and rotor, when accessible
  • Access computer for trouble codes
  • Perform engine maintenance check

Being attentive to your engine maintenance is one of the most important ways to protect your vehicle and be sure it is kept in Road Ready condition.
